OK, I'm doing it, I'm growing facial hair for Movember.
Right now I have the beginnings of a goatee but it may get trimmed down to a moustache by the end of the month. Don't tell Chrissie!
Did you know:- Every year over 24,000 Canadian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and about 4,300 die of the disease, making it the number one cancer threat to Canadian men.
- 1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- All men over the age of 40 are potentially at risk and should talk to their doctor about the disease and early detection. Prostate cancer is 95% curable if detected and treated early.
( To donate to my Mo ) And hey, if you haven't sent my birthday present yet, you could just donate instead! ;)
The money raised by Movember is donated directly to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada who will use the funds to create awareness and fund research across the country into prevention, detection and treatment, with a goal to ending the threat of prostate cancer.
Not bad for 5 days, eh? |

CNN: NZ judge backs girl over 'embarrassing' name
The name?
Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii.
New Zealand Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt made her a ward of the court so she can change her name. Thank goodness. It's too bad it took until she was 9 for this to happen.
Before you think celebrities give their kids the worst names (think: Sunday Rose, Chastity, Moxie Crimefighter, Inspektor Pilot, Moon Unit)... OK, those are bad... look at some of the other names mentioned in the article.
Twins named "Benson" and "Hedges".
"Violence".
"Number 16 Bus Shelter".
And from the adult world, Last month, an judge in the U.S. state of Illinois allowed a school bus driver to legally change his first name to "In God" and his last name to "We Trust."
Cute.
It borders on child abuse when parents give their kids stupid names. I'm all for keeping the state out of childraising, but geez, have half a brain and think of how your kid will be teased when you call them O'Shun or Tymathy (a girl, even). Even cute misspellings aren't so cute when you're older and trying to be taken seriously. If you must, give the stupid name as a middle name. |

I want to whine about some common Internet mis-spellings. Not the usual "it's versus its" but a few different ones that piqued my interest recently.
whinge - what the heck is THAT? See, I whine. Whinge sounds like a white hinge. peak/peek/pique - OK, repeat after me. Mountains have peaks. I peek around corners. That article piqued my curiosity. It's not hard. We do not "take a peak" at something. |

OK, here's a report on my vasectomy. The quick report: it went well. To be honest, I don't know what the fuss is about. Having my wisdom teeth removed was a bigger deal.
( now the long report )
I'm leaving this public as a reference for anyone who is considering getting a vasectomy. I give it two thumbs up. :) Kudos to the staff at the Oromocto hospital - they treated me very well. |

If you're into the softer, folkier side of music, you really should listen to AnnieCanada on YouTube. She is awesome.

Back in the day, I was not a big Van Halen fan. But recently I have been listening to groups from the 1970s and early 1980s that I never listened to, and I'm growing to be a big VH fan. Are they called VH?
Like most people my real exposure to Van Halen came with 1984, and their stupid yet brilliant video for Jump. Between that, Panama, and Hot for Teacher I kinda liked the band.
I recently borrowed 5150 from the library, just to try the Hagar version. It's awesome!
I remember the video for Finish What Ya Started (from OU812) very very well. Girls with guns.. mmmmmm.
OK, enough yammering... back to work. |

Just for nostalgia, I decided to haul the old IBM Aptiva out of the basement and turn it on. It started OK and even had the correct date and time.
Then I decided to get brave and install a network card in it. The 3Com Etherlink III I had lying around worked great until I plugged a network cable into it - then the system froze. An Intel EtherExpress 16 worked better and lo, I was on the Internet with IE3 under Windows 95... behind a firewall. Then the funniest thing happened.
Hardly any web sites worked. I quickly figured out that it was because they all use 128-bit SSL and IE3 didn't know what that was.
I downloaded IE5 from a web site, put it on a CD (since this PC doesn't have USB), and installed it on the Aptiva. Perfect.
So here I am, blogging from a ten-year-old Pentium-100 equivalent PC and it works fine.
All I can say is, thank God I'm behind a firewall. This would be p0wn3d so fast I wouldn't know what hit it. |

| Mexico update |
[Jan. 9th, 2007|11:01 am] |
A quick update from an Internet cafe before Chrissie takes over.
Another beautiful day in Mexico, supposed to go up to 32 Celsius today. It´s already warm and breezy at 11 AM. 3 degrees in Fredericton and -21 in Winnipeg.
Cruise ship Diamond Princess came into port this morning at 7:30 while I was taking Jamie for a walk. It is quite impressive.
Incidentally it is very hard to type on this keyboard as it is a Spanish keyboard and the punctuation is not in the right places. For example, the @ sign is on the 2 key but I need to press the Alt Gr key to use it.
Probably more time in the pool and on the beach today. Busy times.
Time to go! |

Yoinked from fingertrouble. Go to Pop Culture Madness and select the year you became 18. Snip the best 50 songs from the list and paste it in your journal. Bold the ones you like and strike the ones you dislike, italic the ones you know but don't like nor dislike and the ones you don't know will stay common text.
For me, 1985. It was a good year for music.
