Pronunciation [May. 1st, 2006|12:19 pm]
Steve
Why do Americans pronounce "turbine" as "turban" rather than "tur-byne" (as in "whine")?

Of course, there are other differences in pronunciation between Americans and Canadians. Witness "roof" - "rooooof" versus "ruff"

Can you think of any others?

My silly son [Apr. 26th, 2006|07:37 am]

(the oldest one, that is)

Nick has this habit of jamming all kinds of junk into the left front pocket of his jeans. Then he often walks around with his hand in that pocket, which drives me crazy. This morning I asked him to empty his pocket to show me what he was carrying around. Here's the inventory:
- pocket basketball game
- $5 bill
- two quarters
- comb
- tickets from the arcade
- bandaid
- broken rubber band

He's such a boy.

I forgot to mention that he had a bowling tournament two weeks ago. They bowl candlepin (10 pins, small ball). It was the provincial tournament and it was held in Saint John. Unfortunately his team did not advance to the Nationals, but he had a good time. He bowled 57, 77, 65, 75 and 84.

As I mentioned in the previous post, we had attended my first SCA event, the "Mis-Spent Lent Event". My next two events were the War Practice and the very first S&M War.. er, Great Northeastern War.

about the WarCollapse )

After the War, I spent some time honing my fighting skills to an appropriate level of mediocrity. I was never anything but adequate, as my interests soon shifted to archery.

[music |"Coming Home", Ian Thomas]

Jamie is doing very well. He is eating well, and it's all coming out the other end! Not to be too graphic, but there's quite a bit of velocity on the back end.

I was holding him this evening after burping him (he's a burping expert, by the way), and he was just looking around with his little yellowish eyes. He kept making these little smiles* and all sorts of funny expressions.

His hair is all spiky. We swear we didn't use any conditioner or gel!

Indications are that he should come home tomorrow. Of course, the pediatrician makes the decision, but he's looking a lot better. We may have to bring the bili bed home too, but hey, we'll deal with whatever comes up. I sure hope he comes home soon.

[mood |sadsad]

We took Jamie back to the hospital at 10 this morning. They did the bloodwork and found that his TBI (transcutaneous bilirubin index - a measure of how much bili he has) had increased despite the use of the bili bed. They decided to re-admit him to the hospital for a day or two and put him under the bright lights (phototherapy) to get his level down. They did not re-admit Chrissie, so she is free to come and go, although her presence is obviously required to feed Jamie.

When he's not feeding, he lays naked in a little isolette (sealed plastic crib) with flourescent lights above and to one side. I was surprised to see that the lights are ordinary daylight flourescents, the very same lights I have in my model train room. I joked that if I had only installed more lights down there we could drive some trains while he got better.

Obviously we are not happy with this situation but it is what is best for him. Chrissie and I shuttled back and forth between home and hospital a couple of times today, so we could get some things and spend supper with the rest of our family. I definitely appreciate the help my in-laws Wayne and Sandra are giving in maintaining our household while Chrissie and I try to get Jamie back home. They have been keeping Nick and Lauren entertained without any complaint. I guess it's good they are spending time with our other two kids, since W&S live in Winnipeg, a few thousand miles away. Still, I'm sure W&S would like to see Jamie more.

I have a few photos but they're still in the camera at the hospital. He wears these little "sunglasses" while he's under the lights to protect his eyes. There are little Velcro hearts on each side of his head to anchor the sunglasses. He looks a little like the Geordi LaForge character from Star Trek:Next Generation.

I took Chrissie back to the hospital and stayed with her while she fed Jamie around 9 PM. She is going to stay overnight at the hospital and then Sandra and Lauren will come in the morning. Wayne and I will be taking Nick to his bowling tournament in Saint John tomorrow morning and return in the early afternoon.

The pediatrician said that there is a chance that he could come home tomorrow (Saturday) if his bili level drops quite a bit, but it is more likely that he will come home on Sunday. We're crossing our fingers.

Jamie did come home Thursday. He still has some jaundice, so they sent a "bili bed" home with him so he could be "under the lights" to help break down the bilirubin. We are taking him back to the hospital in about 45 minutes to have them check him again and see if he still needs to use the bed.

Jamie is dressed in the same sleeper that Lauren came home in.

He had a pretty good night, all things considered.

Quick Jamie update [Apr. 13th, 2006|12:43 am]

[mood |tiredtired]

It's late and I'm tired, so this will be fairly brief.

Jamie is doing pretty well and still on track for coming home Thursday, as far as we know. His jaundice has been increasing, so we'll see tomorrow morning what the staff thinks about it. Maybe he'll have to go into the tanning salon for a while to work on that.

Feeding Jamie has been a bit of a trouble but I think they turned a corner today. Things seem to be working a lot better with the help of the boob expert, er, lactation consultant.

I keep adding photos to his Fotopic collection - new ones on the end.

Chrissie pointed out that her two babies look remarkably similar, so I had to dig through the archives to see. Here are two photos... do you think my last two babies look similar?

Baby 2

I assume you can tell which one is which! (no fair peeking at the past few days' worth of photos)
