Movember [Nov. 5th, 2008|09:17 pm]

[mood |hopefulhopeful]
[music |"Sledgehammer", Peter Gabriel]

OK, I'm doing it, I'm growing facial hair for Movember.

Right now I have the beginnings of a goatee but it may get trimmed down to a moustache by the end of the month. Don't tell Chrissie!

Did you know:
  • Every year over 24,000 Canadian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, and about 4,300 die of the disease, making it the number one cancer threat to Canadian men.
  • 1 in 7 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • All men over the age of 40 are potentially at risk and should talk to their doctor about the disease and early detection. Prostate cancer is 95% curable if detected and treated early.
To donate to my Mo )
And hey, if you haven't sent my birthday present yet, you could just donate instead! ;)

The money raised by Movember is donated directly to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada who will use the funds to create awareness and fund research across the country into prevention, detection and treatment, with a goal to ending the threat of prostate cancer.

Not bad for 5 days, eh?

And You Thought "Apple" Was A Bad Name For A Kid [Jul. 24th, 2008|10:37 am]

CNN: NZ judge backs girl over 'embarrassing' name

The name?

Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii.

New Zealand Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt made her a ward of the court so she can change her name. Thank goodness. It's too bad it took until she was 9 for this to happen.

Before you think celebrities give their kids the worst names (think: Sunday Rose, Chastity, Moxie Crimefighter, Inspektor Pilot, Moon Unit)... OK, those are bad... look at some of the other names mentioned in the article.

Twins named "Benson" and "Hedges".

"Violence".

"Number 16 Bus Shelter".

And from the adult world, Last month, an judge in the U.S. state of Illinois allowed a school bus driver to legally change his first name to "In God" and his last name to "We Trust."

Cute.

It borders on child abuse when parents give their kids stupid names. I'm all for keeping the state out of childraising, but geez, have half a brain and think of how your kid will be teased when you call them O'Shun or Tymathy (a girl, even). Even cute misspellings aren't so cute when you're older and trying to be taken seriously. If you must, give the stupid name as a middle name.

Guess-the-Google. You are shown 20 images, and you have to guess the Google search term that produced them.

I want to whine about some common Internet mis-spellings. Not the usual "it's versus its" but a few different ones that piqued my interest recently.

whinge - what the heck is THAT? See, I whine. Whinge sounds like a white hinge.
peak/peek/pique - OK, repeat after me. Mountains have peaks. I peek around corners. That article piqued my curiosity. It's not hard. We do not "take a peak" at something.

Arthur C. Clarke dies (CNN) / Sir Arthur C. Clarke

I'll always remember Clarke for The Sentinel (made into "2001: A Space Odyssey"), Childhood's End, and Rendezvous with Rama. He was a great writer and a great man.

OK, here's a report on my vasectomy. The quick report: it went well. To be honest, I don't know what the fuss is about. Having my wisdom teeth removed was a bigger deal.

now the long report )

I'm leaving this public as a reference for anyone who is considering getting a vasectomy. I give it two thumbs up. :) Kudos to the staff at the Oromocto hospital - they treated me very well.

"I just hope this whole thing gets cleared up before the Academy Awards, because it would really be a tragedy if a similar fate transpired for them," said Richard Zanuck, producer of "Sweeney Todd," which won the Globe for best musical or comedy. (CNN, reporting on the Golden Globes non-event)

Tragedy? Really?

I can think of a few tragedies currently going on around the world that are, um, a little more serious than the writers' strike. Don't get me wrong, the strike is a serious issue but just on a totally different scale.

San Diego mayor supports gay marriage [Sep. 30th, 2007|09:41 pm]
[mood |pleasedpleased]

Sanders changes mind on gay marriage.

Apparently Jerry Sanders was all set to veto a bill to support gay marriage before the California supreme court, but had a last-minute change of heart and signed it.

All I can say is, good for him. I hope for the day when this is no longer news.
